Question Why is the surface of nails so rough?

I have a 7 year old daughter .Her nails are rough surfaced . Especially on thumbs .Is it due to the calcium deficiency?

This is probably caused by a vitamin / mineral deficiency. I would suggest finding a good supplement for her. Another reason can be some of your girl's activities. Does she play outside a lot?

The term trachyonychia is a useful one to describe roughening of the surface of many nails due to various causes. Psoriasis and alopecia areata are responsible for some cases. Lichen planus can roughen nails but the change is usually limited to a few nails and accompanied by discomfort. In many cases no cause can be found and these cases are somewhat arbitrarily listed either as twenty nail dystrophy of childhood or severe nail dystrophy.

I do agree with you it's probably due to the lack of vitamins in her body. Give her more foods and green vegetables to eat or if she likes juices then give her different kind of juices. Give her food that is rich in calcium. Don't let her play with hard thing which harm the surface of the nails.

I agree with this. Mineral deficiency can lead to brittle or rough nails. Also, I would like to add that one should be careful in taking good care of the nails, especially toenails because this can lead to fungi infection.
